PATAGONIA
Welcome to Patagonia, where the world ends and America starts!
MAGALLANES E TIERRA DEL FUEGO
Remote and wild, the southern most region of Chile is one of the most fascinating of its regions, both from the point of view of its history and its geography. La 12th Region, considered the heart of Patagonia, occupies the territory south of 49° S, and includes the western half of the Grande de Tierra del Fuego Islands (The eastern half belongs to Argentina). The islands of this archipelago are mostly uninhabited as is the part of the continent of Antarctica claimed by Chile. Travellers arrive from all over the world with the desire to explore the Torres del Paine on foot, to admire the glaciers or simply to be able to say that they have arrived at the “end of the world.” Patagonia has a natural heritage of rare beauty that should be seen by everyone.
TORRES DEL PAINE NATIONAL PARK
“An astonishing mixture of lakes, mountains, waterfalls, animals and flowers. A rich natural spectacle in which nature seems to reach perfection.”
It is considered one of the most stunning parks and best destinations on the entire American continent. UNESCO declared it a Biosphere Reserve on 28th April 1978. There is no place like it, and it is equipped with wonderful footpaths, campsites and shelters.
Lakes, lagoons, rivers, glaciers of a deep turquoise colour make up this landscape punctuated by columns of granite that rise up for almost 2,800m above the steppes of Patagonia. These include the Paine Grande (3,050m) and Los Cuernos (2,200 m and 2,600 m). These columns have become an iconic image of the Park, and are sought after by climbers from all over the world. Footpaths wind around these columns, passing through woods of ñire, along and across rivers, passing glaciers and climbing up to viewpoints that look out on a landscape of unimaginable beauty.
In this zone there over two hundred plant species, guanaco (similar to llamas) and flocks of condors and flamingos.
Whatever your reason for travelling this far south, keep in mind the latitude and what that means for the climatic conditions, which can be extreme. Strong winds and sudden rain are both common in the summer, and temperatures can vary enormously even in short periods of time.
